Visitors and Patients


Due to COVID-19, we have modified our Visitors Policy for the time being.

The safety of all patients and staff in the Hospital must be the priority. Permitting visitors requires thoughtful planning and depends on many factors including the risk of a COVID-19 outbreak at the Hospital and community, access to personal protective equipment, ability to maintain physical distancing and the volume of people entering the Hospital.

All visitors will be screened for COVID-19 symptoms and must not have travelled outside of Canada or have not had close contact with anyone from outside Canada.

Visitor Restrictions

Emergency Department

One visitor permitted for children under 18 years of age and for other patients if required for consent or the safety of the patient (examples: visual/hearing or cognitive impairment, language barrier, elderly)

Med Surg - 3rd Floor

One visitor daily for admitted patients between 11:00am and 1:00pm OR 5:00pm and 7:00pm

Intensive Care Unit

One visitor daily from immediate family between 11:00am and 1:00pm OR 5:00pm and 7:00pm


One designated support person for diagnostic procedures and admissions.

Palliative/End of Life

One visitor with unrestricted hours, two visitors are permitted at end of life.

Scheduled Outpatients/Surgeries

Patients are asked to attend Hospital alone unless a support person is required for consent or safety reasons.

Essential visitors must successfully pass the entrance COVID-19 Screening. Those who fail screening will not be permitted to enter the Hospital without special permission. Visitor exceptions for patients with probable or confirmed COVID-19 may vary from this document. All visitors must perform hand hygiene and wear a mask while in the building.

Virtual Connections Program

  • Virtual Connections are available daily from 10:00am - 9:00pm.
  • Urgent connections may be made at any time at the discretion of the clinical team.
  • Requests can be made by phone to all units of the Hospital.

Be prepared when being admitted and discharged from St. Joseph's General Hospital. Following our guidelines and be aware of your rights and responsibilities as a patient.

Admissions and Discharges

Prepare for your visit by knowing what to bring with you and what not to bring with you.

Please Bring:
  • Your current Ontario Health Card and all relevant private insurance information which covers semi-private or private accommodation.
  • A list of medications and dosages that you are presently taking.  Include those you buy without a prescription and all herbal medicines.  Please leave your medication at home. 
  • Housecoat and non-slip footwear
  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, hair brush, body lotion, shaving supplies, and any other toiletry item that you use daily
  • Facial tissues, sanitary items
  • Pen or pencil
  • Your cane, walker, wheelchair or other assistive device that you use.
  • If you are admitted and your vehicle is in the parking lot, please arrange to have someone pick up your vehicle and return in to your residence.  There is a toll charge if leaving the Pay Parking lot.
Please Do Not Bring:
  • Valuables such as jewelry, cash greater than $20.00, or credit cards.  Leave these at home or with a family member or friend.
  • Electrical devices such as TV’s or computers
  • (St. Joseph’s General Hospital is a public building -- the hospital is not responsible for cash or personal belongings that may go missing from your bedside)
Discharge Planning

Planning for discharge will begin at the time of your admission.  Your health team, in collaboration with you and your family, will determine when you are ready to go home. You will be given specific instructions to follow once you leave the St. Joseph's General Hospital. You may also be given a prescription for your medication.  For best care, have all of your prescriptions filled by the same pharmacy.

Discharge time is 11:00 a.m. if you are being discharged home, please make arrangements for a family member or friend to pick you up by discharge time so that other patients requiring admission can be accommodated.  If your pick up is delayed, you may be asked to pack your belongings and wait in a chair so that housekeeping staff can prepare the bed room for the next patient.

Rights and Responsibilities

Patient’s Rights
  • Every patient has the right to be treated with courtesy and respect.
  • Every patient has the right to privacy and confidentiality.
  • Every patient has the right to be informed of their condition, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis in a manner which is understandable to them.
  • Every patient has the right to give or refuse consent to treatment, including medication, in accordance with the law and to be informed of the consequences of giving or refusing consent.
  • Every patient has a right to expect that members of their Health Care Team will communicate with one another in order to ensure continuity of care.
  • Every patient has a right to know who is providing care at all times and who is the doctor in charge of their treatment.
  • Every patient has the right to express their concerns and receive a response to their questions.
Patient’s Responsibilities
  • Patient rights carry with them certain responsibilities. We ask that each patient and/or their representative respect the following obligations.
  • Each patient or their representative agrees to provide the Health Care Team with all information relevant to the diagnosis and treatment of the patient.
  • To facilitate the timely provision of care consistent with their wishes, each patient shall provide the St. Joseph's General Hospital with the name of a representative who the Hospital personnel can contact in the event that the patient is unable to express their wishes.
  • Furthermore, every individual is strongly encouraged to prepare a Power of Attorney for Personal Care.
  • Each patient agrees to follow the treatment plan that was developed on their behalf.
  • Each patient accepts personal responsibility for the consequences if they decide not to follow the treatment plan developed on their behalf.
  • Each patient agrees to be courteous and respectful of other patients, visitors, and members of the St. Joseph's General Hospital’s Care Team. This includes recognition that the needs of other patients and/or their families may sometimes be more urgent than their own.
  • Each patient agrees to respect hospital property, policies and procedures.
  • Each patient or their guardian agrees to reimburse the St. Joseph's General Hospital for all charges not covered by the Provincial Health Care Plan or private insurance.
